Support at Home Program: What You Need to Know

At Catholic Healthcare, we are dedicated to keeping you informed about developments in aged care services. Recently, we attended a comprehensive webinar focused on the Support at Home program, an initiative aimed at transforming the in-home aged care system across Australia. Here’s a detailed recap of the essential points shared during the session.

What is the Support at Home program?

The Support at Home program is a new initiative designed to streamline and enhance in-home aged care services in Australia. Starting from 1 July 2025, it will replace the existing Home Care Packages program and the Short-Term Restorative Care program. Additionally, the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) will transition to this new framework no earlier than 1 July 2027.

Why is the Support at Home program being introduced?

This program is a part of the government’s larger reform agenda in the aged care sector. The aim is to create a more integrated, flexible, and user-friendly system that better meets the needs of older Australians. By consolidating multiple programs into a single model, the government hopes to reduce confusion and administrative burdens, making it easier for individuals to access the necessary support to live independently at home.

Key features of the Support at Home program

The webinar highlighted several key features of the Support at Home program, including:

  • Simplified access: A single point of access for all in-home aged care services, making navigation easier for older Australians.
  • Greater flexibility: Individuals can choose services that best meet their unique needs and preferences.
  • Improved quality of care: The program aims to ensure higher standards of care through stronger regulatory oversight and better training for caregivers.
  • Personalised support plans: Everyone will have a tailored support plan that will be reviewed regularly to ensure it remains relevant and effective.
  • Efficient use of resources: By integrating multiple programs, the government aims to reduce duplication and ensure more funding goes directly to frontline services.

Timeline for the transition

What does this mean for older Australians and their families?

For older Australians currently receiving care or considering applying for in-home support, the transition to the Support at Home program will bring several changes:

  • Current recipients: Those receiving services under the existing programs will be transitioned to the new system over time, with a promise of no disruption to their care.
  • New applicants: New applicants from 1 July 2025, will apply through the Support at Home program, designed to simplify access and reduce wait times.
  • Providers: Service providers will need to adapt to the new requirements, which may involve changes in how they deliver care.

To ensure a smooth transition, the government is collaborating with service providers, carers, and aged care recipients to provide clear information about what to expect. Staying informed about these upcoming changes is essential for anyone currently receiving care or planning for future needs.

A new era in aged care

The Support at Home program signifies a crucial step towards a more efficient, flexible, and responsive aged care system in Australia. While changes may be on the horizon, the overarching goal remains to provide better support for older Australians to live independently and with dignity in their homes.

If you or someone you know is currently receiving in-home aged care services, now is the perfect time to start planning for these changes. Stay informed, ask questions, and be ready to embrace the new opportunities for support and care that the Support at Home Program will offer.
