As we celebrate National Volunteer Week from 20 to 26 May, we express our gratitude to the volunteers who selflessly give their time to those in need, ensuring they are seen, heard, and acknowledged.
In the heart of their fortnightly meetings lies a remarkable connection between Joanna, a vibrant 39-year-old from Poland, and Reza, an endearing 86-year-old from Croatia.
Since March 2020, Joanna has faithfully visited Reza every other Saturday, a tradition cherished by both. Their routine is simple yet profound. They stroll to a nearby café, engaging in heartfelt conversations over coffee.
Despite language differences—Reza often prefers her native tongue—Joanna and Reza effortlessly communicate; a bond transcends words. In the initial stages of their visits, Reza encountered hearing difficulties due to an infection, prompting Joanna to communicate creatively via Post-it notes.
Reza's presence is a cherished link to Joanna’s grandparents, all of whom she has lost, except for a grandmother battling dementia in Poland. Committed to continuing their friendship, these visits bring immeasurable joy in the absence of family in Australia.
For Reza’s daughter, Irene, Joanna is not just a volunteer, but an integral part of their extended family. ‘It is so great to have Joanna in our lives, and that mum is able to provide comfort for her, too,’ Irene said.
As they share laughter and stories, bridging the gap between generations and cultures, Joanna and Reza embody the true essence of human connection—a bond that knows no bounds.
