On International Women's Day (IWD) 2025, we honour the inspiring journey of St Peter’s Lane Cove care worker Belayensh Mesfin.
Belayensh, or Belle, as she prefers to be called, beautifully illustrates this year’s IWD theme, ‘Accelerate Action.’ Her story shows how she not only stepped towards equality but also ran her own race for a better life.
Born in Ethiopia in 1985, Belle encountered significant challenges early on. She was orphaned at the age of three, only to grow up in an orphanage, where she found comfort and strength through sport.
Her commitment to competitive running and European handball which she began at 14 years old, proved to be a ticket out of her troubled homeland towards a brighter future.
Competing in the 2000 Sydney Olympics:
Belle’s perseverance and exceptional talent led her to compete in the 5000-metre event at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games at the age of sixteen.
‘Running was more than just a sport for me; it was my cultural cornerstone and a path to a better life,’ said Belle.
During this time, Belle sought asylum in Australia due to the ongoing conflict in her home country. Granted a visa to stay, she was determined to build new beginnings.
Belle pursued studies in aged care, earning both a Certificate III and Certificate IV. In June 2011, she joined Catholic Healthcare to become a cherished member of the care community.
‘Joining Catholic Healthcare was a turning point in my life. The support from fellow employees and the opportunities I found here have been incredible,’ she said.
Her commitment to others includes caring for her twins, Prince and Priscilla. She also finds great joy in looking after the residents of St Peter’s.
‘Every day, I strive to make a positive difference in the lives of our residents, she said.
