The festive season is just around the corner, and there is still much to do! From making the plum pudding to polishing the silverware to running around for groceries and last-minute gifts, it can feel overwhelming and stressful, causing you to forget to care for yourself.
No need to worry; our allied health team has prepared a helpful checklist. Just remember to ‘check twice’ so you, too, can have a merry little Christmas and a healthy new year!
Maintain a Balanced Diet
- Eat nutrient-dense meals: Ensure meals are rich in vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and whole grains to support immunity and energy.
- Hydration: Drink water, or herbal teas throughout the day, even if you are not thirsty. Dehydration can be a concern, especially in the hot weather (be mindful of fluid intake if you are on fluid restrictions and consult your GP or a medical professional) .
- Limit sweets: Christmas treats can be tempting, but it is important to enjoy them in moderation. Excess sugar can affect energy levels and contribute to other health issues.
Manage Stress & Mental Health
- Stay connected: Even if you're at home, staying in touch with family or friends via phone or video calls can reduce feelings of loneliness.
- Engage in hobbies: Reading, puzzles, knitting, walking, or other calming activities can keep the mind active and reduce holiday stress. You can even start planning your social activities for 2025 by taking a closer look at our Mind N Move staying active programs.
- Mindfulness or relaxation: Consider guided breathing exercises or meditation for relaxation, especially if you feel overwhelmed by holiday activities. You can access virtual Online Yoga classes via our Mind N Move program.
- Vitamin D: Getting a morning dose of sunlight (vitamin D) has been clinically shown to help you fall asleep more easily at night. A dose of bright light shortly after waking may also help you feel more alert – setting you up for the day during the festive period.
Monitor Health Conditions
- Keep track of your medications: Ensure all medications are taken as prescribed. The holidays can be a busy time, so using a pill organiser or setting reminders can help.
- Check for any changes: Keep an eye on any new or unusual symptoms (such as fatigue, dizziness, or swelling) and consult your GP or medical professional if concerned.
Stay Safe at Home
- Minimise risk of falls: Make sure paths are clear of clutter, and consider adding non-slip mats to avoid slipping, especially in the bathroom or kitchen. Your friendly occupational therapist is now available for an in-person or online consultation pre-Christmas or in the New Year if you would like some support or advice. Alternatively, Catholic Healthcare also run community-based Stepping on Falls Prevention program to help build strength, confidence, mobility and balance.
- Stay cool: Summer is a tricky time to stay cool - if your house is hot, make sure you drink water. A wet washer placed on your neck or wrists can help keep you cool and reduce your temperature.
By following these tips, you can ensure a healthier and happier festive season.
